Damon Braces vs. Invisalign: Which Is Right for You?

Damon Braces vs. Invisalign: Which Is Right for You?At the office of Dr. Charles C. Harrington, we've helped countless patients improve their smiles with orthodontic treatment. Across the board, one of the most common questions we hear from our orthodontic patients is: should I get braces or Invisalign? We wanted to shed a little light on this question and explore the difference between braces and Invisalign.

The Difference Between Damon Braces and Invisalign

Choosing between braces and Invisalign is tough, and ultimately, there's no right answer – it all depends on what you're looking for in your orthodontic treatment. At our practice, we offer a specialized form of braces called Damon braces instead of traditional metal braces. Damon braces use the same basic mechanism as traditional braces, but utilize self-ligating brackets which don't need elastics. This makes Damon braces a more effective treatment, shortening overall treatment time and improving comfort during treatment.

In addition to the advantages that come from self-ligating brackets, Damon braces offer one of the most reliable treatments available. We can use Damon braces to treat even the most severe orthodontic conditions, and Damon braces are also more cost-effective than other forms of treatment. For patients looking for a durable, reliable treatment from their Gaithersburg orthodontist, Damon braces are an excellent option.

Invisalign offers a great choice for patients looking for a more discreet treatment method. Instead of metal brackets, Invisalign works by using a series of clear plastic trays, called aligners to straighten teeth. The aligners fit directly on the dental arch, are almost invisible when worn, and are easy to pop in and out for things like eating and oral hygiene. Invisalign treatment is generally shorter than treatment with braces, but the difference is less pronounced when comparing them to Damon braces.

While Invisalign comes with a number of advantages, it can't treat every orthodontic condition: for patients that need realignment of the jaws, we'll usually need to use braces instead of Invisalign. That said, Invisalign is a great choice for patients that want an orthodontic treatment with a minimal impact on their day-to-day routine.
