As a specialist in advanced orthodontic care for over three decades, Dr. Harrington and his staff provides state-of-the-art dental treatments that best fit your lifestyle and budget...including modern orthodontic treatments like Invisalign for both teens and adults! While Invisalign is a wonderful alternative to traditional metal braces, knowing how to take care of your removable aligners on a regular basis is crucial to the overall success of your treatment, especially while travelling. Below, Dr. Harrington and his orthodontic team details the best ways to take great care of your Invisalign clear aligners while out of town, regardless if travelling for work or for play!

Taking Care Of Your Teeth On The Road

No matter where you’re travelling, taking great care of your teeth is detrimentally important to the overall well being of your mouth. Brushing, flossing, and using mouthwash become twice as important while on holiday, as it may be more difficult to visit a dentist if you develop any dental problems. Make sure to brush and floss in the morning and in the evening before bed. This dental hygiene routine is a failsafe plan that ensures your smile will stay happy and healthy.

Don’t Forget To Clean Your Aligners!

While it’s critically important to maintain a clean mouth, it’s doubly important to keep your Invisalign aligners as crystal clear as possible. Be sure to brush them twice a day with cold water, toothbrush and toothpaste when you brush your teeth. Without regular cleaning, your aligners can accumulate food particles and bacteria that attack tooth enamel. If you’re travelling to a place where the drinking water is unsafe to consume, use bottled water!

Preparing For Changing Out Your Invisalign Aligners

If you’ll be travelling for more than two weeks, make sure to take at least three Invisalign sets along: your current set, your previous set, and your next set. When the time comes to change your aligners, and you can easily put them in and take them out, you’re probably safe to move on to your next pair. If your most recent trays still feel tight, don’t be afraid to stick with your current aligners, or go back to your previous set.

Be Sure To Have Your Invisalign Aligners With You At All Times

When you’re travelling with Invisalign, make sure to keep your aligners with you at all times! Instead of stowing them away in a checked bag, keep them handy in a carry-on. As flights could be delayed, or your luggage could be lost, it’s critically important to keep your trays by your side at all times. If you lose your Invisalign trays, the progress you’ve made during your treatment thus far comes to a screeching halt. Once you reach your destination, the same rules apply; make sure to keep your aligners and their case with you as you backpack around Europe, or go for a hike in the mountains. Remember, you must wear your aligners at least 22 hours each day! As a side note, if you’ve already finished with your Invisalign treatment, you can use your last set of aligners as a retainer to ensure your teeth are as straight as possible!
