Invisible Orthodontic Treatment in Gaithersburg & Kentlands

At the office of Dr. Charles C. Harrington, we believe everyone deserves a healthy, beautiful smile that they feel proud to show off. That's why we're proud to provide high-quality orthodontic treatment to patients in a warm, welcoming office environment. We also believe treatment should be as convenient as possible, which is why we're excited to offer our patients Invisalign: a revolutionary alternative to traditional braces.

A Clear Way to a Beautiful Smile

When you think of orthodontic treatment, chances are you picture a teenager with a grid of metal wires and brackets glued to their teeth. These are traditional metal braces, and while they're still the most popular form of orthodontic treatment, they're not the only option. In fact, a revolutionary treatment alternative called Invisalign lets patients straighten their teeth almost invisibly.

Invisalign uses a fundamentally different method to straighten the teeth. Instead of metal brackets and wires, Invisalign uses clear, removable trays – called aligners – that fit directly onto the dental arch. The aligners are virtually invisible when worn and easy to pop in and out when brushing, flossing, eating, or drinking, which gives them a number of advantages over traditional braces:

  • Virtually Invisible: Invisalign aligners are clear and fit directly onto the teeth, making them almost invisible when worn. This means no one has to know you're straightening your teeth!
  • Enjoy Your Favorite Foods: Because you remove the aligners to eat and drink, you don't have to give up foods that are hard, sticky, or gooey as you would with braces. With Invisalign, you can still enjoy all your favorite foods!
  • Oral Hygiene is Easy: With Invisalign, you can brush and floss your teeth normally, making oral hygiene as easy as ever.
  • More Comfortable: Invisalign aligners are smooth and lie flat against the teeth, making them more comfortable than the metal brackets and wires of braces.
  • Protection from Grinding: If you suffer from bruxism (teeth grinding), Invisalign aligners offer a thin layer of protection for your teeth.

While Invisalign used to be relegated to only mild orthodontic cases, advancements in the technology now let us treat a wide range of conditions with Invisalign. We'll go over your own situation at your initial appointment and work with you to determine if Invisalign is the best treatment option for you.

The Treatment Process

The treatment process varies from patient to patient, but for most patients, the process will look something like this:

  • At your consultation appointment, we'll perform a detailed orthodontic evaluation and use advanced orthodontic technology to create digital impressions of your teeth. This means we'll create a fully realized, 3-dimensional computer model of your mouth and bite that we'll use to plan your treatment.
  • We'll use this computer model to design a treatment plan that moves your teeth into optimal alignment for a healthy smile.
  • We'll break this plan down into one week increments, then send the plan and our instructions to the Invisalign company.
  • They will manufacture your own set of custom-made aligners designed to fit your unique mouth.
  • You'll wear your aligners for 20-22 hours a day, removing them only to eat, drink, brush, and floss.
  • You'll wear each pair of aligners for 1 week before switching to the next, and with each new set, your teeth will move closer to their final positions.
  • Once you finish with the last set of aligners, you'll have a beautiful, healthy new smile to call your own!

Invisalign Teen

In addition to traditional Invisalign, we also offer Invisalign Teen, a specialized form of the treatment custom-tailored for teenage patients. Invisalign Teen offers special "eruption tabs" that hold space for teeth that haven't erupted yet, and each aligner comes with built-in "compliance indicators" that let doctors, parents, and patients know if the aligners are being worn long enough.

Caring for Teeth During Treatment

How to Clean Clear Aligners

Oral hygiene is critical to the success of your treatment, and this will take a continued commitment throughout your treatment. You should floss daily and brush your teeth twice a day.  You'll need to take care to clean your aligners diligently as well. You'll need to brush your aligners inside and out when you brush your teeth to keep them fresh and clean..

After your treatment ends, we'll fit you with a special clear retainer. We'll give you detailed instructions for wearing and caring for this retainer, and it's critical to follow these instructions to safeguard your smile and ensure it lasts a lifetime.
