Damon Metal Braces

Smiling woman wearing Damon metal braces

The field of dentistry has introduced many new forms of teeth alignment solutions such as Invisalign and ceramic braces. However, one type of braces has managed to stand strong in this evolving field. Metal braces are the traditional dental option and have remained on the most effective methods of dental alignment to this date.

Metal Braces and How They Work

Metal braces are considered the traditional orthodontic option for tooth straightening and correcting. These braces contain specialized slots(brackets) that are placed teeth that allow orthodontic wire to pass through. Through the use of different thicknesses and tautness, the orthodontic wire applies a small amount of force onto the teeth. This force moves the teeth into the desired position, effectively straightening them. This process is incremental as every six weeks, the braces have to be readjusted to move the teeth to the desired position.

Metal braces are constructed with materials that provide sufficient strength and resistance to corrosion, commonly stainless steel or titanium alloys. This allows them to last longer until the completion of the treatment.

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Metal Braces:

As with most dental options, metal braces have their own unique advantages. Considering these advantages and disadvantages makes it easier to decide if metal braces are right for you.

Pros:

  • Affordable - Metal braces are more affordable than other orthodontic alternatives.
  • Effective - Metal braces apply strong direct pressure onto the teeth allowing them to move teeth fast and efficiently.
  • Allows Precision - Because metal braces move the teeth almost individually, orthodontists are more able to control the precise placement of teeth. This results in straighter teeth.
  • They can't be misplaced - Metal braces are attached to your teeth and secured in place. They aren't able to be misplaced as they can't be taken out of the mouth without the assistance of the orthodontist.

Cons:

  • Aesthetic Difference - Metal braces have survived through the years with the stigma of being unattractive due to their metallic appearance. As they are placed against the background of your teeth they are very noticeable. In recent years, however, colorization has helped to improve the aesthetic qualities of metal braces.
  • Food Restrictions - Gum chewing and other food restrictions are required so that the metal braces won't come undone.
  • Teeth Cleaning - As parts of the teeth are covered by the braces, there might be slight discoloration between the spots underneath the braces and the rest of the teeth. However, the difference usually isn't noticeable and goes away quickly.

Who are Good Candidates For Metal Braces?

Metal braces are suitable for both children and adults. Metal braces can be adjusted to accommodate for growth in children and keep the teeth straightening process on track. Since adult teeth are set and no longer grow, metal braces provide fast and efficient adjustments for these individuals as well.

Cost of Metal Braces

Metal braces are the less expensive treatment option. High lab fees are associated with Invisalign treatment.

In Summary

Metal braces are a great affordable option for orthodontic treatment. Despite minor disadvantages, metal braces remain reliable and efficient making your best smile possible faster.
